What is a Drive Pulley?

You know you’re holding a V-groove drive pulley because your owner’s manual says so. But anyway, what is a drive pulley?

Drive pulleys are pulleys attached to a power source that, in use, exert force on a belt (or cable or chain). The belt is attached to the object being driven, which will then rotate. It’s a power transmission.

By themselves they won’t get you motivated to get up early and use your snow blower and clear your driveway, but when combined with other components, they will definitely make the job easier!

What is a Drive Pulley Made Of?

Drive pulleys can be made from any hard/sturdy material – die casting, steel and cast iron are the most popular choices.
All drive pulleys must have two components:

A disc, usually with grooves around its circumference. This is the area where the leash or rope will ride. The belt will transfer the power to another pulley in the system.
A method of attaching a pulley to a shaft so that the pulley turns at the same speed as the shaft. This is usually accomplished with an attached hub that protrudes from the center and usually has keyways and/or set screws.
